OpenCode 2 v2.2.0 follows v2.1.4 with experimental desktop plugins you can create, install, and share, image and decision generation APIs for plugins and the SDK, configurable prompt-cache TTLs per provider and model, and keyed session instructions that plugins add as small per-step updates. Three breaking changes ship, led by @opencode/ai moving to a Promise-first package root.

Desktop plugins and a refreshed app#

The desktop app gains experimental plugins you can create, install, and share (#55246, #59469, #59489), documented at the GUI plugins page.[1] The SDK side adds GUI plugin APIs for toasts, dialogs, notifications, tabs, composer controls, and custom UI (#59469). The desktop experience was refreshed across several changes (#56898, #58865, #55838, #57962), and the Todo tool returns in desktop as an opt-in (#59092).

Image and decision generation for plugins and the SDK#

v2.2.0 adds experimental image and decision generation API endpoints (#59190) and image and decision entrypoints for catalog providers (#59380). A decision generation API lands in the AI package, covering OpenAI Decisions, System One, and Cloudflare Run models (#58758). Model-list API requests can filter by type, and custom model configuration can set a model type (#59355, #59388). GPT-6.1 Terra and GPT-6.1 Terra Fast are available through Sign in with ChatGPT (#59359).

Keyed session instructions for plugins#

Plugins can attach and update keyed session instructions with ctx.session.instructions.entry.put/list/remove (#56550). Each change is added as a small update at the next step, the entries survive compaction and reverts, and they do not start an extra model turn.

Prompt-cache TTLs and session media#

Prompt-cache TTLs are configurable per provider and model (#59157). An experimental session media API adds opt-in media URI support (#59103), and content-addressed blob storage for session media sits behind experimental.media_blob (#58656, #58741).

Breaking changes#

ChangeWhat it means
@opencode/ai root is now the Promise APIThe Effect API moves to @opencode/ai/effect, @opencode/ai/promise is removed, and the wildcard subpath export is replaced with explicit provider and protocol entry points (#58847, #59183).
The OpenCode GitHub Action is removedIt is no longer published; remove it from your workflows (#59032).
TUI plugins require OpenTUI 0.7@opencode/plugin now requires @opentui/core and @opentui/solid 0.7.0; plugins on OpenTUI 0.6 fail to install until they upgrade (#59295).

Providers and reliability#

  • Vertex AI uses the correct endpoints for the eu and us multi-regions (#59335), and Databricks hosts that include http:// or https:// are accepted (#59334).
  • Groq honors shared parallel tool-call and service-tier settings (#58871), xAI Responses sends top_k (#58868), and Bedrock throttling is retried as a rate limit (#58759).
  • Kimi receives valid tool schemas for tuple, default, and keyword-like arguments (#59207).
  • Provider-reported session costs are recorded (#58562), and session compaction is sized from the provider's reported token count (#59441).

Plugins reach further into the UI and the model layer#

A plugin in v2.2.0 can touch the interface, the model layer, and the running session. The GUI plugin APIs put toasts, dialogs, tabs, and composer controls in a plugin's reach, image and decision generation open model calls to it, keyed session instructions let it steer a running session, and event subscriptions can be filtered by type (#58864). The three surfaces are the shared thread running through the release.

The three breaking changes all land on the same people. The Promise-first @opencode/ai root, the OpenTUI 0.7 requirement, and the removed GitHub Action each ask plugin and SDK consumers to change code, so upgrading an existing plugin is part of moving to v2.2.0.
