Codex CLI v0.162.1 is a patch release on top of v0.162.0 that fixes two reliability problems: a terminal-UI crash when an asynchronous question spans multiple lines, and a startup failure that hit when a running background server's feature settings differed from the CLI's defaults.[1]
What Shipped#
| Fix | What It Does |
|---|---|
| TUI crash on multi-line questions | An asynchronous question containing multiple lines no longer crashes the terminal UI. The fix keeps the line breaks and the complete hyperlink destinations intact when the question renders.[1] |
| Background-server startup failure | Startup no longer fails when a running background server's feature settings differ from the CLI's defaults. The compatibility check now applies only to feature overrides passed explicitly on the command line.[1] |
The TUI Fix#
Codex renders the agent's asynchronous questions in the terminal UI. Before this release, a question that spanned multiple lines crashed that view. The fix preserves the line breaks so the question reads as written, and keeps each hyperlink destination whole rather than truncating it. A multi-line question now displays instead of taking the session down.[1]
The Background-Server Fix#
Codex can run a persistent background server that the CLI connects to. When that server was already running with one set of feature settings and the CLI came up with different defaults, startup could fail on the mismatch. This release narrows the compatibility check: it fires only for feature overrides you pass explicitly on the command line, not for differences between the server's settings and the CLI's built-in defaults. A server started earlier no longer blocks a later CLI invocation whose defaults have drifted from it.[1]
What This Tells Us#
Both fixes land in the Rust workspace that holds the core, the TUI, and the server. Neither adds a flag, a model, or a configuration surface; this is a maintenance release that closes two ways a session could break.
The server fix is the more structural of the two. Codex can keep a background server resident across CLI invocations, which introduces a version-skew problem: the running server and the CLI that connects to it can hold different feature settings. This release narrows the startup compatibility check so a difference between the server's settings and the CLI's built-in defaults no longer blocks the run; only an explicit command-line override is checked. That keeps the resident-server path from turning an ordinary startup into a failure.
A point release like this marks where the current friction sits: the terminal rendering path and the resident-server lifecycle, the two parts of a coding agent that run on every session. Both are less visible than a new model and more load-bearing for everyday use.
