Gemini CLI v0.63.0: headless plan execution, auth loop fix, connection-retry progress#

Part of the Gemini CLI Version Tracker series. | Gemini CLI on GitHub | Releases
Gemini CLI v0.63.0 follows v0.62.0 with a reliability release and no new models. Plans now run to completion in non-interactive mode, an auth fix stops the infinite login loop caused by file contention and dropped relaunch state, and the CLI shows retry progress while recovering a dropped connection.[1]
New environment variable#
One variable appears in v0.63.0, tied to the auth fix below.
| Variable | What It Does |
|---|---|
GEMINI_CLI_AUTH_OVERRIDE | Carries the chosen auth type across the CLI's self-relaunch so the selection is not lost. It covers the supervisor-state-drop case in the auth loop fix.[2] |
Staying signed in#
The auth loop fix is the headline reliability change. v0.63.0 addresses an infinite auth loop that could come from three sources: contention on the credentials file, a keyring that is unavailable in a headless environment, and dropped supervisor state.[3] The new GEMINI_CLI_AUTH_OVERRIDE variable carries the chosen auth type across the CLI's self-relaunch so the selection is not lost, which covers that last case.[2]
Plans in non-interactive mode#
v0.63.0 lets a plan execute autonomously when the CLI runs non-interactively, such as a scripted or piped invocation.[4] The experimental.plan setting already existed; this change is what makes a plan run to completion outside an interactive session, which is the mode a CI job or an automation script uses.
Reliability and safety fixes#
The rest of the release is fixes across the agent loop, the shell tool, and path handling.
| Area | What changed |
|---|---|
| Connection recovery | A retry progress indicator is displayed while the CLI recovers a dropped connection, so a stalled request shows that a retry is in flight.[5] |
| Agent loop memory | Tool output size is bounded and the memory lifecycle is tightened in long-running agent loops.[6] |
| MCP config errors | A missing MCP enablement config is distinguished from malformed JSON, so the error names which of the two it is.[7] |
| Path safety | Policy redirection gates, path validation, and workflow parsing are aligned.[8] |
| Git overrides | v0.63.0 removes a diff.external override that the release notes flag as invalid.[9] |
| Shell and ACP | Paused stdin is restored after capability detection, the temporary directory is cleaned up when a background shell exits, and in ACP mode a session is resolved before config initialization with same-minute filename collisions avoided.[10] |
What this tells us#
v0.63.0 carries no new models and no new feature strings. Every entry in the release notes is a fix, weighted toward auth and the agent loop. Two of the fixes, non-interactive plan execution and the auth loop, affect running without an interactive prompt.
The release also aligns the policy redirection gates, path validation, and workflow parsing.[8] And it removes a diff.external override that the release notes flag as invalid, a small correctness fix.[9]
